Basketball Transfers: Use Playing-Time Estimates to Guide Recruiting Questions

Check your role, target rosters, deadlines, and coach expectations before making a college basketball recruiting or transfer decision.

Start With Your Current Role

Review your minutes per game, possession share, and basketball stats from the last full season. Verify your role and numbers against more than one stat source, then look at the roster for each target program, including announced transfers in and out.

Compare your options across a shortlist rather than looking at one program in isolation. A more familiar or more competitive program does not automatically offer the role you want.

A Short Checklist Before Committing

Is there an opportunity at your position, or a returning starter ahead of you?

Has the coaching staff given you a clear, specific role rather than a vague promise?

Does the academic and eligibility timeline work for a transfer this cycle?

What is your decision deadline relative to the transfer window?

Confirm transfer rules and eligibility with your school’s compliance office.

Three Moves Before You Decide

First, verify the target roster rather than relying on last season’s depth chart. Second, compare playing-time ranges with your own priorities. Third, prepare two or three specific questions for the staff about the role they see you filling.

Use estimates to sharpen questions in a coach conversation. Gather more information when an estimate and a coach’s stated plan disagree. Confirm with film study and a campus visit before making a final call.
